“Help! Help! My little sister fell into the ditch! Waaah…” A girl in her teens was terrified and at a complete loss. At this critical moment, the commotion caught the attention of a sanitation worker who was cleaning up trash along the roadside about 50 meters away. He sprinted over, didn’t even have time to take off his shoes and socks, and leaped into the ditch—which was nearly a person’s height deep—before scooping up the little girl, who was just over a year old. He is Mu Congrong, a 64-year-old sanitation worker at the Muzhai Village site of the Lujishun Sanitation Company in Jieshou City.

The little girl was saved. Another janitor, Zhu Guihua, who had arrived shortly afterward, went down to the riverbank and gently took the girl into her arms. Still shaken, the girl didn’t start crying until much later. “As long as she’s okay, as long as she’s okay!” Exhausted, Mu Congrong pushed aside the reeds and weeds around him, ignoring the pain from the puncture wounds on his feet and the scrapes on his arms and forehead, and said with deep satisfaction.

It turned out that, because of the afternoon heat, Mu Fei and his wife from Xiaomu Village had to go work in the fields, so they asked their eldest daughter—who was in her teens and home for summer vacation—to watch over their youngest daughter, who was just over a year old. Unexpectedly, the older daughter—who couldn’t stand being left alone—carried her little sister in one arm while riding an electric scooter with the other. As she was returning home from the fields, more than 2 li away, the scooter was traveling too fast, and both rider and vehicle plunged into a roadside ditch, flinging the little girl into the water, which was over 1 meter deep. Panicked, the older daughter screamed for help, leading to the scene described at the beginning of this article, where the janitor who had just arrived leaped into the ditch to rescue her.

Bystanders saw that Mu Congrong’s feet were bleeding bright red after he came ashore and urged him to clean his wounds, but he waved them off, saying, “I’m at my age now—it’s fine, it’s fine. As long as the child is safe, that’s all that matters.” Upon learning the truth, passersby unanimously praised Mu Congrong, the sanitation worker, for his act of bravery!
