Changsha is the birthplace of Chu civilization and Xiang-Chu culture, boasting a rich history and cultural heritage spanning 3,000 years, with approximately 2,400 years of urban history. The city was first established during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods as part of the State of Chu. Due to the influence of Qu Yuan and Jia Yi, it is known as the “Hometown of Qu and Jia.” Changsha is also known as the “Famous City of Chu and Han.” The excavation of important cultural relics, such as the Mawangdui Han Tombs and the Zoumalou Bamboo Slips, reflects its profound heritage of Chu and Huxiang cultures. Yuelu Academy, located at the foot of Yuelu Mountain, stands as a symbol of Hunan’s culture and education. Throughout history, the city has produced numerous prominent figures and preserved a wealth of historical and cultural sites, earning it a place among the first batch of National Historical and Cultural Cities.

Dongkou County is part of Shaoyang City in Hunan Province. Located in southwestern Hunan at the eastern foot of the Xuefeng Mountains and along the upper reaches of the Zi River, it was historically a strategic military stronghold that “controlled Yunnan and Guizhou to the west and dominated Changsha and Hengyang to the east.” This area was traversed by the Red Army during the Long March and served as the main battlefield for the “Xuefeng Campaign”—the final battle of the War of Resistance Against Japan. It is also the hometown of General Cai E, known as “the foremost figure in defending the nation, overthrowing Yuan Shikai, and restoring the republic”; General Yuan Yilie, former Chief of Staff of the Navy; renowned educator Liu Shouqi; renowned writer Xie Pu, and renowned painter Huang Tieshan, as well as the place where Song Wenbo, a national “Model of Love for the People,” grew up.
